Sheinelle Jones has worked in the news for almost ten years. From a young girl in Wichita, Kansas, the new Today Show co-host knew exactly what she wanted to do. She interned across the US while she was in college. After that, she worked her way up to anchor at a local affiliate station before she got the call from NBC, several months ago.
As an anchor, Sheinelle reports on every type of story you could imagine—from wrongful incarcerations to behind the scenes at Fashion Week and much more. Still, as of late, society has had to deal with and watch horrific incidents of police brutality, racially motivated murders and communal unrest. As we continue the #BlackLivesMatter conversation we started in the February issue of ESSENCE Magazine by carrying the theme into our Empowerment Experience at #EssenceFest, we selected experts to discuss how to move forward. Since she’s been there to report on it all, we’ve asked her to moderate our major “Black Lives Matter” panel on July 4. The dynamic panel features thought leaders and political experts Dr. Steve Perry, LA Senator Karen Carter Peterson, Nicole Paultre Bell, Melanie Campbell and Van Jones.
In a new interview with Hal Clark at The Sunday Journal, Jones emphasized how she hopes to mold the conversation. “I want it to be a passionate conversation, but I also want it to be a productive conversation,” Jones said.
“When you really sit down… And peel away at the onion, how do you really start to attack the problem?”
