Rocking a blonde and magenta bob, New Orleans native Big Freedia made her highly anticipated debut on the 2017 ESSENCE Festival Beauty & Style Stage, where she shared her major hair and style influences!
The Queen of Bounce regarded her mom, a hairstylist with 30 years of experience, as the ultimate inspiration because she always looked “on point” where ever she went.
She would also style Freedia’s tresses in any style she wanted, even if it meant that she would get a lot of strange looks and attention! Sometimes, Freedia would get in trouble in school because her hair would become a distraction for the other students at school.
She recalled a specific moment when she wore the “Marge Simpson” hairstyle to school and students would just stop and stare. Thankfully, that didn’t stop the star from living out loud and being comfortable in her skin.
When asked if she had any advice for those currently struggling with embracing who they are, she said,“do what you want to do, be who you want to be, wear what you want to wear, love who you want to love and live the way you want to live.”
She learned that advice early in life from her mom, who always accepted and loved her for who she was. Freedia now has the luxury of not having to do her hair because she has an amazing glam squad that styles her almost everyday, but she does tackle day to day maintenance by always sleeping with a satin bonnet and keeping her favorite wig brush close by!
