It’s inevitable that when five insanely talented singers are in the same room, some sangin’ is going to go down. At Saturday night’s ESSENCE Fest 2017 Superdome concert, attendees were blessed with a surprise performance from Mary J. Blige, Chaka Khan, Lalah Hathaway, Jazmine Sullivan and Ari Lennox.
After an evening of soul-stirring solo shows from the aforementioned women, Khan took to the stage for her final song, “I’m Every Woman.” Like clockwork —the crowd began singing along to her beloved hit— when Sullivan stepped out to join the icon on stage.
Carrying the second verse, the audience was pleasantly surprised when Blige, Lennox and Hathaway walked out for the chorus.
After singing a couple verses together, Khan then passed the mic down the line to hear solos from each woman— and they did not disappoint. Hathaway and Sullivan did classic jazz scats, Lennox belted a beautiful melody and Blige gave us her soulful vocals we live for.
The amazing evening ended on a sweet note.
