With her latest single titled “Old Times,” the smooth R&B songstress perfectly captures the feeling of wanting to cherish every moment spent with your loved ones.
“The music itself kind of spoke and forced my pen to create that feeling,” Marsha told ESSENCE. “The song itself already musically gives you a vibe of when music used to feel good.”
The visual for the song connects the lyrics to the all-too-familiar feeling Black women of today are met with—the need to constantly be reassured that our sons, fathers, husbands, brothers and any other Black men we love are safe in the midst of a racially-charged climate that continues to fall short of recognizing the value of Black lives.
A proud wife and mother to a beautiful 1-year-old baby girl, Nyla, Marsha says she herself can relate, so making the decision to include her daughter and husband in the video was a no-brainer.
“Once I created and the actual song and concept, the story began to shape itself,” she added. “And I wrote it prior to meeting my husband and having a daughter. When it came to creating the visual, by that point, I’d fallen in love, I was a wife and mother, and what was happening in our world was evident. I’ve always created a moment for social narratives to be a part of my music. As a Black woman and mother, raising a queen, I’m just trying to pinpoint the obvious.”
Marsha’s forthcoming third studio album, NYLA, is due out in September.
