Today is Random Acts of Kindness Day, and although we should be kind every day, this observance reminds us of the importance of intentionally bringing joy to those we know and those we don’t know. Random Acts of Kindness Day was started in 1995 in Denver, founded by the nonprofit, The Random Acts Of Kindness Foundation. Random Act of Kindness Day aims to cultivate feelings of warm-heartedness in the hopes of brightening someone’s day.
Being kind has benefits. It’s shown to increase self-esteem, empathy, and compassion, and improve moods. Kindness can increase your connectivity with others, limiting loneliness. Practicing it can also help your mental health – boosting serotonin and dopamine, both neurotransmitters in the brain that provide feelings of satisfaction and well-being.
Although encountering kindness from others these days may feel scarce, you can take it upon yourself to show goodwill to your tribe today and every day moving forward. Don’t hold back from uplifting others with compliments and compassion, and don’t forget about being kind to yourself, too. You can easily show yourself love by practicing self-talk with a gratitude framework. Try to limit negative thoughts and self-doubt and be mindful of how you speak to yourself.
We’ve shared several simple acts to help you on your kindness journey.
