Afros are having a moment this week. On Sunday night, Kaliegh Garris won the Miss Teen USA pageant sporting her natural afro, then on Monday, the Dior Cruise 2020 runway show featured black models in Afros, box braids, cornrows, and natural curls. The show, set against the backdrop of Morocco’s El Badi Palace, featured a line inspired by the Northern African country, and included work from local artisans. For a show incorporating a global, and very African perspective, it made sense that beauty emphasized would be very natural.
Keeping the makeup minimal, the beauty team opted for a full brow and nude lip. What’s more, white models were specifically not adorned in the historically black hairstyles. They wore ponytails, pixies, bobs, and other styles in their natural hair textures. It’s refreshing to see a large luxury brand like Dior make the distinction where it matters. Now, whether or not the models could do a little less mean mugging and appear to enjoy life, is a different conversation for a different day.
