Rihanna is the queen of everything, and we’ve been obsessed with her crown lately. The singer’s regal red hair has us wanting to “take a bow” because we respect anyone who can make the striking hair color look amazing. Plus, we have to pay homage to whom it’s due for inspiring our strands’ next hue.
Between RiRi’s red box braids and crimson-colored curls, we’re ready to become subjects of a dye job. Coloring your hair, however, comes with a few golden rules that everyone must follow. The first decree is to wash your hair with a color-safe shampoo.

Rihanna’s hairstylist, Yusef Williams, told ESSENCE that he used Suave Professionals for Natural Hair Sulfate-Free Cleansing Shampoo ($5, target.com) to prep the tastemaker’s hair for last Sunday’s 2019 BET Awards.
“I wanted to really feature the bold color and let it speak for itself!” With that in mind, Williams opted for the sulfate-free formula to cleanse and hydrate Rihanna’s hair ahead of styling. The deal on sulfate: Shampoos composed of the harsh ingredient, tend to strip color-treated hair of moisture and luster. Suave’s shea butter touting cleanser, however, had the 31-year-old’s mane shining bright like a diamond.
If you plan to dye your hair this summer, then this is one tool you need to add to your arsenal.
