Perhaps it was being surrounded by so many different types of artists, but this past weekend’s LACMA Art + Film Gala seemed to bring out the creativity in its guests. Given the event’s roots, glam squads took the opportunity to go with full on wearable art when it came to hair and makeup. And KiKi Layne won the night.
Blessed by the treasured hands of celebrity hairstylist Larry J. Sims, the If Beale Street Could Talk star donned a structural ‘do that stood out as a highlight of the evening. Made up of mixed colored faux locs, her updo sort of looked like a planet with two rings orbiting around it.
“I was inspired by the Gucci dress that her stylists Wayman and Micah chose for her. The color on KiKi’s chocolate skin felt regal and royal,” he told ESSENCE. “Her make up artist Rebekah Aladdin always makes her look like a queen so I wanted to do something grand that would complement everyone’s efforts.”
The craftsmanship of the intricate detailing could be seen from every angle. It was throwback Fulani mixed with Himba mixed with Paul Williams. He even laid her egdes with a scalloped detail that didn’t compete with the rest of her coif. It was a reminder that the folks behind the hair and makeup of our favorite celebrities are true artists, and when they go off, masterpieces are created. The manipulation of the hair shows Sims’ sculptural skills (and the skills of his assistant K’Tiste Bradshaw, who he said helped execute his vision), and the way the hair complemented her standout gown was a testament to his professional eye. It’s hard to believe it only took two hours to complete.
“KiKis confidence and beauty inspires me. She’s built like a supermodel, with beautiful brown skin. Her natural textured hair is the icing on her full package,” Sims continued. “Girls like KiKi don’t come around often. I’m honored to work with her. We all get to play dress up and enjoy watching her pull off our creations.”
Celebrity makeup artist Rebekah Aladdin gave the beauty a fresh face, eyes accented with soft purple shadow, and a glow that could be seen just as far as her hair could. It all came together to create the ultimate red carpet beauty moment, where creativity, originality, and natural hair were celebrated in the best way. It’s a look we’ll be talking about for years to come.
