A smooth operator in every sense of the word, the Nigerian, British-bred singer hit the scene over 30 years ago, and has remained true to an understated, but nonetheless breathtaking look that’s been replicated countless times over.

With her low ponytail, hoop earrings and rouge pout, Black girls, including me, gawked over Sade and knew that one: being a Black woman is always lit and two: there’s no better combination than red lipstick and Brown skin.
Adu’s dedication to her singular sound and beauty choices have undoubtedly influenced the idea of a signature look, something a lot of us spend years trying to craft for ourselves. “Trendsetter” is a title we throw around loosely in 2017, but if her staying power is any indication, Sade is more than worthy of that title.
