Creating twists was the first hair style I learned as a young dusty-footed girl in Mississippi. Braids or plaits came soon after. Twists and braids are used to create many natural hairstyles, and knowing how to do both will make setting your hair in a style a breeze. But even when we think we’ve mastered the technique they still look crazy. Here are four possible reasons…

If it is too tight, the twist will buckle. If it is too lose, it will not look neat and unravel. Either way, not cute.
If your hair is kinky, use a thick butter like shea butter or castor oil along with a moisturizer. If your hair is naturally curly, don’t add a curl enhancer. This will make your curls pop which is not aesthetically pleasing for a twist. Only use a light moisturizer and oil.
If your twists are too big, they will unravel. And if you’re planning to wear a twist-out later, there will be little to no definition. If you plan to wear your twists as a style, make them small to medium sized. The smaller size helps them stay neat and last longer.
