My hair is…natural.
I started my hair journey…On November 1, 2011. I began a journey that would forever change my outlook on beauty and its standards. I cut my relaxed, shoulder length hair into a small, curly afro.
My favorite hair products include…
- 1. Honey Hair Chile Lush Custard
- 2. Aunaturals LCO KIT
- 3. AS I AM CO WASH
- 4. Lottabody setting lotion, and many more.
The secret to having healthy hair is…to take the time to care and maintain your strands. It takes time to properly care for your hair. Maintaining natural hair isn’t always easy. I’ve experienced the highs of the perfect twist out or rod set, but I also know the lows of hair breakage, dryness, and all-around bad hair days.
My biggest hair challenge is…length. It can be very time consuming when styling but I wouldn’t change anything about it.
I love my hair because…it’s a huge part of me and my best accessory. I’ve learned to embrace my natural hair texture by being creative and versatile which allows me to show others that you can achieve any look while being natural.
My hair crush is…Janae Mason. She has perfected the rod set and makes it look easy!
Val Butler was raised thinking that the straighter her hair, the better opportunities she’ll have in life. Now as an adult, she put those myths aside and is learning to be herself. Val’s hair journey is one of cultural adventure, semi-impulsive excitement and self-discovery.

Aderonke’s hair journey has been more like a life journey. When she decided to stop relaxing her hair, she instantly had a new lease on life. “Hair becomes a part of you and the journey never ends,” she says. I’m never going back to perms because to me, it isn’t just hair. It’s life, love, growth, strength and the ability to thrive.”

My hair is…natural.
I started my natural hair journey… in April 2011.
My current hair regimen includes: deep conditioning biweekly, weekly conditioning, shampooing once a month and protein treatment once every two months.
My favorite hair products include: kinky curly knot today, Shea moisture curl pudding, herbal essence hello hydration conditioner and castor oil.
The secret to having healthy hair is…maintaining the protein, moisture balance and making sure that hair is protected from harsh weather. And, embrace your hair enough to love it at any point short, long, shrinkage or not.
My biggest hair challenge is…keeping moisture in my hair especially in low porosity hair, but [it’s] nothing a bit of water can’t handle!
I love my hair because… it’s so versatile, I can go from straight to curly. I love the way [my afro] reaches and stretches towards the sky and creates shade even in the coldest of winter days, just like an evergreen plant.
My hair crush is…Solange Knowles, I absolutely love the way she always wears her hair out in a fro!
