The big chop! For some, it can be one of the most exciting experiences in the beginning of your natural hair journey; for others, not so much. Some people view the big chop as a negative experience because it involves cutting your beloved tresses. For me, the big chop was very sudden and I didn’t have any time to prepare.
I remember that cold snowy day in Germany like it was yesterday. My husband and I sat in the bathroom and he looked me in my anxious eyes waiting for me to give him the green light to start cutting my hair. Once I gently nodded yes, the excitement began. I remember seeing the first section of hair fall to the floor. I was shocked, but all of a sudden I felt liberated! It was one of the most exciting experiences of my life.
When my husband finished cutting my hair, I remember looking in the mirror in awe, smiling and staring at the new me! The next morning, I felt a sense of pride in myself. I couldn’t believe that I decided to cut all of my hair off and most of all I did not know I had the mental strength to make such a drastic change in my appearance.
I learned that I am more confident in myself than I had ever known and I also learned that my spirit determines my beauty, not my hair.
