When I was relaxed, I used to trim my hair like clockwork every six to eight weeks. I felt doing this would keep my hair at its healthiest state. I have to say, to a certain extent, it did. Now that I am natural, I do not trim my hair as often. I only trim my hair every six to eight months. Yes, you read that correctly. I am sure you all would like to know the reason behind this.
Here are my reasons: Reason number one, shrinkage. I wear my hair curly 98% of the time, and if you have curly hair you know that shrinkage is a big deal. Your hair will appear shorter than what it really is and I feel that trimming frequently will disguise your progression of growth. The second reason I do not trim my hair much is due to the fact that I do not have an issue with split ends. I do get single strand knots, but split ends are a problem of the past for me since I have went natural. I am sure that has a lot to do with the fact that I do not wear my hair straight often. After my big chop, my very first trim was 18 months post BC. I have learned that trimming my natural hair is not on the top of my priority list.
Trimming is very important, but for me retaining length and keeping my hair hydrated is more important.
