When I big choped I was very excited to share my new look with the world! I wanted to know what everyone thought of my new “natural ‘do.”
I remember calling my mother and telling her that I decided to go natural and cut off my hair…all of it! She wasn’t impressed. How could I make such a drastic move? After chatting for an hour or so, she said it was a great idea and she finally supported me. It was reassuring to know that my mother was one of my supporters in the very early stages after my big chop.
However, my aunt wasn’t as accepting. Initially she seemed pretty laid back about my decision, but then she assured me I was going through a “phase” and I would have a relaxer again within a year. Clearly that didn’t happen! My hairstyle wasn’t a phase—it’s a lifestyle change.
After telling other family members about my decision, I learned a few things about them: Some wanted me to style it the way they saw fit. But that’s not realistic; I have to do what’s best for me. When going through your journey remember everyone will have opinions about your hair, whether good or bad, but it’s your choice to do what works for you. Find your own hair happiness.
