One of my concerns was how I would style my hair for an interview. Should I wear it out? Or should I wear it out of my face? I would always go for the hair out of my face option because I like to think that it is a great way to show eye contact to my future employer. From my experience, I didn’t style my hair any differently from when I was at home. Your hair should not be an issue in the workplace. The same went for my natural coworkers. We all had different textures and we all wore our hair with pride in the workplace. I would actually get compliments on my hairstyle from my supervisors and coworkers.
I’ve learned that being yourself in the workplace is important. I always made sure that my hair was groomed properly, meaning that I styled it so that it was presentable. As long as you do this, there should not be any issues.
Confidence is key in the workplace. I always felt that our hair is our crown and we can accessorize it according to our style, outfits and mood. I’ve had several people tell me at work that they are natural but do not wear their natural hair because they were afraid of what an employer may think. They also explained after seeing my natural hair along with a few of my coworkers natural hair, they have decided to wear their hair too. It is a great and rewarding feeling when someone is inspired by your hard work and efforts. Just have fun with it!
