Half ponytails aren’t new—in fact, they’ve been around longer than the most common hairstyles around. But, for the VMA’s Rita Ora upped her ante and opted for interconnected, half ponytails. “For this look, I was inspired by the paneling on her dress,” says celebrity hairstylist Chris Appleton. “I wanted to bring that detailing into her hair to create an overall look that was cohesive.”
First, Appleton prepped Rita’s hair with Matrix Biolage Cleansing Conditioner Anti Frizz Leave in Treatment to help control frizz and static. Then, he blow-dried her hair with a flat brush to give it a smooth, sleek look. Next, Appleton divided her hair into clean sections tying off each section. Next, Appleton created six ponytails that are interconnected, and then flat ironed out her look. Finally, he finished it off with a few spritzes of Matrix StyleLink Style Fixer to fix it off to ensure that the look stayed put all night.
Still think the look is uber complicated? According to Appleton, getting this look can be as simple or difficult as you want it to be. While he interconnected six ponytails for Rita’s look, he suggests joining three ponytails when creating the look on your own. “As you get confident, you can add more if you choose,” he says.
