Blonde is no biggie for The Queen—she’s always rocked a lovely golden mane. But we were a little surprised last night to see just how blonde the talk show host has gotten. Queen Latifah’s hair hasn’t ventured into Beyonce-platinum territory yet, but it’s getting there. The new look got us wondering, what’s the best way for black women to pull off blonde (meaning really, really blonde) locks? Color master and all-around hair genius Rita Hazan gave us the scoop: “Blonde hair with darker roots gives an edgier look to women with brown skin and olive undertones. The darkness at the roots adds depth, allowing one to go very light while still complimenting tan or brown skin.” A close look at Queen’s hair illustrates Hazan’s point—her hair’s much deeper at the roots. So there you have it. Black girls with blonde ambition should first seek out the help of a skilled colorist (Don’t even think about trying this at home) and ask for a deeper color at the roots.
Beauty Note: Loving Queen Latifah’s deep wine pout as much as we are? It’s CoverGirl Queen Collection Lip Color in Burgendelicious (Q410). You’re welcome.
