Did you know that ends of our hair is the oldest and most fragile part of our hair? The slightest friction can cause irreparable damage. We asked Kien Hoang, Oribe Hair Care educator and owner of Umbrella Salon, and Ronnie Stam, Creative Director for Oribe Hair Care to give us a few pointers. Check them out below!
ESSENCE: What are a few ways woman can protect their ends from breaking?
Kien Hoang: 1. Keep your ends moisturized! Since natural hair tends to be textured and curly, it needs a lot of moisture. Sometimes it’s best to just shampooing and conditioning the ends—I recommend this technique because people often over-cleanse. 2. Make sure you use a masque three times a month. And, add a few drops of a nourishing hair oil. 3. Always use a heat protectant before heat styling. 4. Get regular trims to keep hair healthy. 5. Also, hair that is naturally curly tends to lack moisture so it’s very fragile, which is why it’s important to use heat protectants when heat styling!
ESSENCE.com: On average, how much conditioner should women apply to their hair?
Ronnie Stam: The amount of conditioner you use depends on your hair length and type. My best tip for using the right amount is to condition your hair section by section. It takes more time, but you know you’re using the right amount and it actually saves you from using too much conditioner.”
ESSENCE.com: What are some ways to avoid tangles and knots?
Hoang: One way to avoid tangles and knots is to condition in a downward motion when you’re in the shower. I also suggest investing in a great wide-toothed comb to gently tease out any knots.
