Tracee Ellis Ross, hosted the 10th anniversary of BET’s Black Girls Rock! and she didn’t disappoint. While the natural-haired beauty captivated the audience, her quick hair changes were the talk of the evening as she rocked over a dozen unique hairstyles with the help of Celebrity hairstylist, Larry Sims.
“This is her first time hosting by herself,” says Sims to People. “She wanted to rise to the occasion. We were finalizing things right up until the day before the taping.”
Throughout the show, Ross wore 10 wigs and while she prefers her own natural tresses, she wanted to step outside of her comfort zone. “She really wanted to play with different look, but she’s not a wig girl,” says Sims. “It was definitely a huge conversation: ‘Do I stay to my true, natural, hair and keep it really authentic, or do we play dress up and go there?’ She [Ross] really wanted to play with different looks, so in talking about her ideas for how she wanted the show to develop, she was game.”
From cornrows to a massive transformation on stage, Ross engaged in a musical homage to Chaka Kahn, Queen Latifah and the beautiful Diana Ross (her mother) each time changing her hair to fully personify each performer. Later, she sported various bobs and a dreamy updo.
And, of course she ended the night with the loveliest of them all…her own natural hair.
