Like the age-old adage proclaims, seeing is believing.
Demetria Obilor, a North Texas traffic anchor, is one person who truly comprehends this truth. Every morning, as she delivers the daily traffic report for WFAA-TV, Obilor rocks her natural hair. “Growing up, I didn’t see any news anchors with curly hair or natural hair or even braids,” she said during a Facebook live segment for the channel.
Karsyn, a 4-year-old who strikingly resembles Ms. Obilor, took notice of the anchor’s crown and religiously watched her segment every morning. After Karsyn’s mom posted to Twitter that her daughter loves Obilor’s natural hair, the tiny tot was promptly invited to the show.
After helping the anchor during her traffic segment, Karsyn and her mom spoke with Obilor about the importance of natural hair during the same Facebook Live segment. Having experienced discrimination about wearing her natural hair in the workplace, Obilor wants to arm future generations with the confidence that allows them to be themselves.
During the live video, Karsyn’s mother also noted that “representation…in society is just so important for us. I want her to see other people in the media that look just like her and for her to just rock it and be proud and embrace it.”
