Gone are the days of women getting subtle highlights. Now, women are poppin’ up all over my social media timelines with bold and pulsating hair colors. Even stars like Rihanna are tasting the rainbow and are experimenting with bright purple, turquoise, pink and blue hues.
The only problem with vibrant hair color is that it usually requires chemicals to achieve such effervescent tones. While you’re transitioning, you should avoid any kind of chemical. The line of demarcation—where your natural hair and relaxed ends meet—is very fragile and will break easily. I know it’s tempting to jump on the color train, but adding any kind of chemical begs for breakage. However, the good news is you have options.
Installing a vibrantly colored sew-in will give you the look without harming your hair and will also allow you to switch it up. You can rock a deep blue one week and the next Elmo red. But, if you really want to color your own hair try a vegan, semi-permanent dye fortified with conditioners that add moisture and act as a filler to hair.
The safest option is to temporarily color your mane with hair chalk or use an eyeshadow. There are a plethora of colors to choose from and you don’t have to worry about your hair being damaged in the process. This summer, be bold and don’t be afraid to experiment. You never know, adding a little color to your hair could add a little more color to your life.
