Imagine this: It’s the middle of the night, and as you slumber peacefully, a little person gently sits on your pillow, removes your satin bonnet and carefully creates single strand knots throughout your mane.
Thank God this isn’t tue! Single strand knots also fondly called fairy knots aren’t created by little Tinkerbelles as you sleep, they are made by you. These knots are triggered by washing your hair wildly, wearing styles like twist-outs, braid-outs and ‘fros and everyday maintenance and activity can create these little knots. I remember the first time I saw a fairy knot when I was transitioning—I was amazed that one strand of hair could loop around itself creating a knot without someone physically making it.
Single strand knots are a natural occurrence in naturally kinky and curly hair so don’t freak out if you have them. They do not harm your hair. If you don’t like the way they look, there are certain things you can do to lessen the number of fairy knots you get.
• Never go to sleep without wearing a satin scarf or bonnet.
• Wear protective styles more often. • Condition frequently. I recommend every time you wash.
• Seal your ends every night.
• Do not comb dry natural hair.
Or you can do nothing like me. You will likely never be able to stop them completely as long as you wear your hair in a kinky or curly state. The only time I lose single stand knots is during trimming sessions. I’ve made peace with my fairy knots. They’re just pesky little friends that come with having fabulous natural hair. Enjoy!
