If I had a dime for every time a friend said, “I want to wear my hair curly, but my natural curl pattern is dead,” or some variation thereof, I could probably quit my day job.
Most of us know the struggle of wanting to rock our natural textures, but let’s be honest; sometimes the curls don’t pop the way we want. Whether it’s from excessive heat, chemical treatments, color or just damaged strands, the majority of natural girls have been through the struggle season of desperately wanting to see a curl pattern.
Zendaya, a hair chameleon, has inspired us all, but did you know she goes through the same struggle? Yesterday (January 26), the actress took to Instagram in a selfie showcasing her natural spirals saying,
“When you’ve spent the past however many years growing your damaged hair back, avoiding heat, wearing wigs and trying every natural product in the world and you finally see a little curl pattern comin back #Yeslawwwwd.”
Ha! She gets it and here are the reasons:
First off, she’s obviously a product junkie like 99.9% of all naturalistas out there. Even as a beauty editor, my linen closet is 90% hair products, 10% linens (they should definitely rename that thing). When she says she’s tried every natural hair product out there, we know the feeling all too well.
Second, Zendaya knows what it takes to get her hair back to its natural state in a healthy way. If you think it’s hard to avoid heat in our everyday lives, imagine a celebrity who has a personal glam squad!
Um, hello! If I had access to a flawless blowout on a daily basis, I think that’d be rather difficult to pass up. Kudos to Zendaya for avoiding heat with hair gurus at your very fingertips.

And finally, she’s a fan of protective styles. From braids to wigs to faux locs, she’s tried it and man, do they look good on her. I don’t think there’s any syle she’s worn that hasn’t been a talked about hair moment.
But have you ever thought she’s wearing these styles to protect her natural strands? I sure didn’t; you learn something new everyday.
Now that we’ve gotten a glimpse into Zendaya’s journey, finish out your week with a boost of encouragement to keep on trekking in your hair adventures.
