There are three things we look forward to when watching the annual Victoria’s Secret fashion show: gorgeous models in festive lingerie, angel wings and those signature beach waves. The covetous hairstyle is iconic, but to be honest, it’s hardly attainable for a majority of the women watching.
Realistically speaking, it’s even unattainable for the models who don’t have naturally straight hair and instead, opt for wearing extensions and wigs to fit the brand’s aesthetic.
However, after Maria Borges made history last year by walking the runway with her natural TWA (that’s “teeny-weeny Afro”), the brand is embracing every model’s natural texture across the board for this year’s show. In short: each woman has room to define sexiness on her own terms.
In an exclusive Facebook Live with Refinery 29, hairstylist Sarah Potempa revealed that all 51 women will walk in the texture they woke up with. “We want to embrace everyone’s natural beauty,” she shared.
“We’re giving a carefree approach to the length and type of curl. Some women with shorter hair, maybe a lob, will walk with that hair. We’re not gonna add extensions to make it super-long. And if someone has short hair on the side or a tight haircut, we’re not gonna put a wig on or put extensions on their head. We’re gonna embrace it. There are 51 women, and we’re gonna make them feel their most beautiful.”
We applaud Victoria’s Secret upholding natural beauty and taking steps to foster a more inclusive environment. We can’t wait to see all the new inspiring hair looks, including “buzz cut angels” Herieth Paul, Maria Borges and Jourdana Phillips:
Looking good ladies! The show airs December 5 at 10pm on CBS.
