Yep, Idris Elba loves to travel just as much as we do. Back in June, the Turn Up Charli star honeymooned in safari bliss at one of the world’s best hotels in Tanzania with his beautiful wife Sabrina. And every Friday through October 2019, you’ll find Elba skilling it on the ones and twos at Club Hi in Ibiza.
Elba has mastered the art of maintaining a vacation mindset, despite his busy schedule. The actor, producer, director, DJ and husband continues to add to his lengthy list of talents and shares the secret to getting it all done is “enjoying everyday like it’s a vacation, because on vacation, everything is just a little bit better.” We couldn’t agree more. “For me, vacation isn’t about where I am, it’s about how I see things,” Elba continues. And judging from his success in 2019 alone, this mindset is worth adopting.
Since the top of the year there have been covers on Vanity Fair and British Vogue, a feature on Wiley’s hot “Boasty” remix, a DJ set at Coachella, the release of The Yardie mixtape, new episodes of Luther, his new Turn Up Charlie series on Netflix, and the debut of his play, Tree. But wait, there’s more! Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw and Cats are both coming out before the end of 2019, and he creative directed and stars in a new feel-good campaign with Stella Artois.
We caught up with the heartthrob to talk travel, music and Sabrina of course.
ESSENCE: What attracted you to the Stella Artois feel-good summer campaign?
Idris Elba: On vacation, everything is just a little bit better. You take time to experience new things and treat yourself more. I teamed up with Stella to show everyone how they can enjoy every day like it’s vacation. As the creative director of this campaign, I was really able to infuse my personal style and experiences into bringing the concept to life. For me, vacation isn’t about where I am, it’s about how I see things.
Any additional projects we can look forward to with Stella Artois?
You’ll have to wait and find out!
We covered your Tanzania Safari honeymoon on the site and our readers loved it! Who curates vacations in the relationship? You or Sabrina?
We both have great ideas for vacations so we discuss where we want to go and what we want to do and make a choice together. Sabrina is usually the one that pulls all the pieces together to actually ‘make it happen’!
Where y’all traveling for the rest of the summer and fall?
Well… I have a DJ residency at Club Hi in Ibiza every Friday for the season, finishing in October so you can always catch us there.
How would you describe the club scene in Ibiza? What other destinations are on your list to DJ in that you haven’t already hit?
The club scene in Ibiza is great. Everyone is so receptive and down for a good time, every single night. Coachella and the USA scene was on my wishlist, and I was blessed to be able to DJ at Coachella this year, which was amazing, so I’d just like to keep the buzz going in the USA.
Your wife is lovely, is her connection to music comparable to yours? Are you teaching her how to get busy on the ones and twos?
She has an eclectic music taste and we both love vibin’ to good tunes together, but she stays away from my decks, ha!
Who are you currently listening to?
I’m loving Lucky Daye right now.
Your verse on the Boasty single is fire, can we expect more music from you anytime soon?
I’d love to put out a Hip Hop album- that’s a big dream of mine.
Top three vacations of all time?
Jamaica. Jamaica. Jamaica. Seriously, the vibe is good, the people are lovely and the food is amazing. The sun and tropical vibes give me a real good feeling each time I’m there.
Hidden gems in London to Eat and Play?
Boxpark Shoreditch is good for food, I also love to go to a West African restaurant on Old Kent Road called 805. Notting Hill is a great place to hang.
