Tina Knowles is opening up about the true meaning behind Beyonce’s Lemonade visual album. Whether or not her superstar daughter is speaking from a personal place on her latest album is still a lingering question, but Tina says the album is really just a reflection of the experiences every woman who has ever been in a relationship can relate to on some level.
“It could be about anyone’s marriage,” Tina said in a recent interview with ABC 13 Houston. “I think that everybody at one time or another has been betrayed and lied to and it’s about the pain.”

Although much of the album’s lyrical content seems to carry a theme of heartbreak mixed with liberation, the resolution of the project reflects a feeling of triumph and forgiveness in the end. Mrs. Knowles-Lawson says it’s also a testament to the healing process after going through a relationship betrayal.
“It’s about the healing process–and it’s about how do you get past that and move on,” she says. “People make it all about the cheating and betrayal and, yes, that’s a part of it because that is something you have to heal from. If you really listen to the poetry, it is one of hope and redemption and hopefully that can be healing for people.”

Speaking on her own experiences with infidelity, Tina also opened up about how her daughters helped pull her out of a rough period of feeling down after her first marriage came to an end.
“I remember my first little pity part and I called them crying and you know, they all came,” she said. “We had a slumber party, we watched old movies all night and ate ice cream–it was very healing.”
Beyonce’s Formation Tour is set to touch down in her hometown of Houston later on this fall on September 22.
