The unofficial end of summer is almost here — Labor Day. And while summer has flown by, there’s still an opportunity to soak up these last few moments. Whether you want to travel near or far, with your boo, or with your family, there are plenty of options still available to you that won’t break the bank (or will — if you’ve got it like that!).
Here are a few destinations to inspire your last-minute trip with top Labor Day destinations across the country and beyond.
01
Costa Rica
With so many flight details to Costa Rica every month, you’re sure to get here for a nominal amount and still have the time of your life. There are so many things to do in Costa Rica, so this trip can scratch your adventure itch or offer meditation and relaxation (though option #1 will be more thrilling) With two major airports in Costa Rica, one in Alajuela close to San José and one in Liberia, Guanacaste, it’s so easy to fly in and connect to whichever province you want. From hiking, surfing to exploring it’s natural beauty, Costa Rica is a grade A option.
02
Baltimore
Baltimore may have had a bad rap before, but this city has certainly evolved, and is worth a visit. Escape to Charm City to experience the Baltimore Waterfront, complete with restaurants, attractions, and of course, the famed National Aquarium. Then, check into the Black-owned Ivy Hotel, which is a beautiful historic mansion turned boutique hotel in Baltimore is Maryland’s first and only Relais & Chateaux property, offering an urban escape for those looking to beat the heat this season. If you’re looking for good eats, Baltimorians will point you in the direction of Miss Shirley’s and Magdelena.
03
Jamaica
Let’s face it: you can never go wrong in Jamaica. From the newly opened S Hotel in Montego Bay to the all-inclusive “treehouse-style” adults-only resort in Negril at Sunset at the Palms, you can get any experience you want here. Perfect for girlfriends’ getaways or romantic escapes, try cliff jumping at Rick’s Cafe, rafting at Martha Brae River, climbing Dunn’s River Falls. And of course, always, and I mean always get some jerk chicken while you are there. Preferably at the home of jerk itself — Port Antonio.
04
San Juan, Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico’s ideal location in the Caribbean, cheap flight options and no passport requirement makes it the perfect island getaway. Not to mention, you’ll be sure to snag a flight for less than $300 from most Northeast cities! San Juan is known for much more than the beach — this city offers a rich history and culture, vast culinary options, and unique natural attractions such as three of the world’s five bioluminescent bays and El Yunque National Rainforest, the only rainforest in the US Forest System. Additionally, if you head there this Labor Day the island will also begin celebrations for the 500th anniversary of the capital of San Juan, making it a historic time to be on the island.
05
Aruba
It is the happy island after all. Take a last minute trip and set your sights on one of Aruba’s pristine white beaches, have dinner “in bed” at Screaming Eagle” and stay at the fabulous Hilton Aruba Resort & Casino, which offers guests a wide range of activities (i.e., stand up paddle boarding, snorkeling), unique spa services and more. And if you get the chance, make sure to experience Aruba “off the beaten path.” The island’s untouched wilderness, unique desert landscapes and cool rock formations, make for some really fun island adventures.
06
Washington D.C.
Chocolate (or in this case, not-so-chocolate anymore) City is always a good idea. Arguably one of the best destinations for young Black professionals, there’s never a dull moment in the nation’s capital. From top notch brunches from some of the best and brightest Black chefs, to partying at The Park at 14th, to exploring the national monuments, to visiting the iconic National Museum of African American History and Culture, don’t say we never put you on to a good time!
07
St. Maarten
The friendly island of St. Maarten/St. Martin is the perfect destination for people looking for an alternative getaway this Labor Day weekend or for families looking for a mini-vacation before the kids head back to school. Lying in the crystal blue waters of the Eastern Caribbean, Dutch heritage St. Maarten and French St. Martin share this stunning island that matches European charm with a Caribbean flair. This vibrant cultural heritage is also reflected in the island’s cuisine, ranked among some of the finest in the Caribbean. Sunsets and sunrises along the island’s 37 beaches are among the most breathtaking in the world. Travelers looking to experience more than just the island’s idyllic beaches can opt for more adventurous activities including sailing, kayaking, horseback riding, ATV tours, or zip-lining, to name a few.
08
Park City, Utah
Just 40 minutes from Salt Lake City, this is a good spot for those wanting to experience a lowkey Labor Day. Especially perfect for families, there’s plenty to explore, and matching accommodations to go with it. For example, Homes & Villas by Marriott International offers countryside cabins, majestic stone castles and chic urban lofts so deciding on where to stay won’t be your hardest decision when you visit here. And thanks to the high mountain altitude, fall foliage starts turning in late August and early September, making the weather just perfect to explore the outdoors. From hiking to biking, horseback riding, you’ll have endless options to become one with nature.
