On January 1, 1804, Jean-Jacques Dessalines proclaimed the island of Saint-Domingue free and independent from French rule following a successful revolution. Now known as Haiti, the first free Black republic has had an inspiring and troubled existence since that historic day, but despite what the media may portray, there is more to Haiti than its struggles. Haiti is an underrated gem filled with wonders and culture just waiting to be discovered.

History Maker
A must when visiting Haiti is a trip to Citadelle Laferrière. Located south of the city of Cap-Haïtien, Citadelle Laferrière is one of the largest fortresses in the Americas and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982. The Citadel, which was built by Henri Christophe, a key leader during the Haitian slave rebellion, was designed to keep Haiti safe from French invasions.
