Black Sand Beaches
Hawaii may make headlines for its pristine powder shorelines, but did you know that the island is also known for its beautiful black sand beaches? Punalu’u Beach on Big Island is one of the most famous of its kind. The black sand was formed as a result of lava spilling into the ocean, cooling and settling at the shore. While the waters at Punalu’u are not ideal for swimming, if you hang around long enough you might make friends with a giant green sea turtle or two.
