When it comes to exotic island getaways, many Black travelers enjoy a quick jaunt to the Caribbean. But across the globe on the continent, lies an island that should not (and can not) be missed. Zanzibar.
The East African paradise offers carib vibes from the moment you step off the plane, with its friendly locals, bustling markets and endless beaches. However, it’s Zanzibar’s diverse culture that will make you fall in love each time you visit the island.
Kenyan native, Silvia Njoki, loves escaping to Zanzibar when she’s looking to relax and recharge. Check out these snapshots from her recent visit to discover why Zanzibar is truly Africa’s paradise.

Feel At Home
Located just off the coast of mainland Tanzania, Zanzibar is an eclectic East African island with strong Arabic, Indian, African, Persian and European influences. The best time to visit is from June through October when the weather is cooler, but December through February is another popular period to plan a trip. Be sure to book a room at boutique accommodations like Emerson on Hurumzi Hotel in Stone Town. The local Zanzibari hospitality and traditional decor will have you feeling right at home.

Fresh Delights
Zanzibar may be known as the “Spice Island,” but it also offers an abundance of fresh seafood and fruits to indulge in. When you’re done sampling the sweet stuff, be sure sure to try a dish loved by locals called, Pilau.

Beach Style
You won’t find a shortage of beaches to slay on in Zanzibar. From the popular Nungwi beach in the north, to Paje lining the island’s southeastern coast, there will always be an IG worthy moment within reach. When you’re done, head to the Rock Restaurant for great food and views.

Animal Adventures
If you’re looking for a memorable experience in Zanzibar, be sure to visit the Baraka Natural Aquarium in Nungwi, for a chance to swim with and feed rescued turtles. You can also spend the day swimming with wild dolphins on quick trip with local tour company, Safari Blue.
