They say all Caribbean islands aren’t created equal, and that couldn’t be more true, especially when the British Virgin Islands are in the mix. With idyllic isles, crystal clear waters and captivating resorts, it can be hard to choose where you want to stay first. Lucky for you, I’ve done the research (it was hard work I swear) and found three getaways that will not only making planning your trip a breeze, but prove that the BVI has something for everyone. Ready? Welcome to your glimpse at paradise.
Family Affair – Bitter End Yacht Club
If episodes of Cheers collided with the pages of The Swiss Family Robinson and had a baby, the Bitter End Yacht Club would be the result. Located on North Sound in Virgin Gorda, a scenic 40-minute boat ride from Trellis Bay, Tortola, the resort boasts 85 treehouse style rooms, each featuring stunning ocean views, a pool, mini kids club, delicious Carib cuisine (do not leave without trying Chef Winston’s award winning Key Lime pie. Ms. Annie will even hook you up with some to go) and free access to their fleet of over 100 yachts, perfect for day trips to The Baths, snorkeling, sunset cruises and more.
But that’s not what makes Bitter End Yacht Club the perfect family getaway.
With a staff comprised of people who have been there since its opening, including awesome resort manager Mary Jo Ryan, the resort is literally one of the few places where, like Cheers, everyone knows your name. Generations of families flock to BEYC year after year and are welcomed with true Caribbean warmth and open arms. Staff here have pretty much grown up with many of the guests that frequent, and remember everything from birthdays and wedding anniversaries to food allergies. Traveling solo? No worries, you’re still family and the BEYC staff will still make sure you’re well taken care of, because that’s what family does.
Romantic Call – Frenchmans
Baecations are all the rage these days, so if romantic beach sunsets and total privacy are on your agenda, head to the West End on Tortola for a stay at Frenchmans. The picturesque private estate looks like something straight out of your favorite romantic movie. The nine detached villas all feature full kitchens, private balconies and breathtaking views of nearby islands, including St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Secret garden-like pathways lead you to the poolside restaurant and bar where you can sip tropical drinks and nosh on delicious steak, pasta and seafood dishes.
Relaxation and romance are the name of the game at Frenchmans.
Spend the day playing tennis or enjoying the panoramic waters of Sir Francis Drake Channel with a little snorkeling and kayaking. Concierge can also arrange for tours of the island, day trips and outside dining if you like. Not interested in leaving your villa? Have staff pre-stock your fridge (it already comes with one complimentary bottle of wine…score!) and set up in-room massages so you can stay wrapped up in love. If you don’t mind sharing the romantic vibes, book the Mango villa and invite your favorite couple along. With bedrooms on different levels, there’s more than enough privacy for all.
Girls Trip – Scrub Island Resort, Spa and Marina
Queen Latifah and crew might have chosen Nola for their girlfriends’ adventure, but if you and your squad are looking for an island getaway where you can get in formation for the gram, look no further than Scrub Island Resort. Who knew the ride to paradise would be free and take only 10 minutes, from Trellis Bay that is? The beauty of this boutique luxury resort hits you right away and with three restaurants, two pools, water sports, sailing and day trips to keep you entertained, your toughest decision will be whether to turn up in one of the 52 ocean view mandatory rooms and villas or ball out in one of the two, three, four and six bedroom villas.
Your private island agenda will always include a #squadgoals photoshoot.
Splurge on the villas (yolo!) which are perched on lush green hillsides and offer exquisite views fit for queens. Kick off your day with massages at IXORA spa and catch up on life as you take in the spa’s breathtaking views. Once you’re done, throw on your sexy swimsuits, grab your cameras, head to one of Scrub Island’s three pristine beaches (my vote is for North Beach) and spend the day taking Black Girl Magic photos that will make all your friends, and men, back home green with envy. End the day with a concierge arranged gourmet chef dinner in your villa, or catch a sunset dinner at the restaurant. No matter which you choose, it’ll be perfect to toast to great girlfriends and a great life.
