In just 3 years, the United States will celebrate the 250th anniversary of its independence. Since the official end of slavery didn’t take place until June 19th 1865, the Black community celebrates only 158 years of official freedom. In 2026, when our nation comes together in Philadelphia, it will be a celebration of the high points of our history, an acknowledgement of the low points and a look at what a more just and equitable nation could look like in the years and decades to come.
This year and in the lead up to 2026, Philadelphia continues its commitment to showcasing Black history in all its glory, right in the birthplace of the United States. The city invites members of the nation’s 9 Black sororities and fraternities to celebrate Black excellence in a destination steeped in formidable history.
But there’s no need to wait until 2026 to explore Philadelphia. This Juneteenth is the perfect weekend to begin your discovery. Here are just some of the reasons why Philly is worth a visit in 2023 and beyond.
Visit Philadelphia: Black Greek Edition Golf Outing
For decades, members of the National Pan-Hellenic Council® (NPHC) have used golf as a community activity to connect, network and fundraise. This year in celebration of Juneteenth that fellowship continues as Visit Philadelphia hosts its second annual Black Greek Edition Golf Outing, showcasing exactly why Philadelphia should be a hotspot for Black travelers. Set to take place on June 19th 2023, the outing includes a lunch and dinner reception with local government officials, prominent Philadelphians and more.
In addition, the daylong event takes a deeper look at Black golfers in the Greater Philadelphia area, while showcasing various landmarks such as Cobbs Creek Golf Course, one of the first golf courses in the nation to welcome Black golfers and host professional Black golf tournaments in the early 1900s.
The event proceeds benefit local colleges, including Cheyney University of Pennsylvania and Lincoln University.
Juneteenth Parade and Festival
The Philadelphia Juneteenth Parade and Festival, produced by the Pennsylvania Juneteenth Initiative and now a staple for Black Americans nationwide, began June 18th 2016. The first event drew in just 5,000 people for a small parade and festival. Over the past 5 years, this event has more than quadrupled in size, now attracting more than 25,000 attendees to enjoy a 1.5-mile-long parade route, multiple floats and an all-day festival featuring renowned performing artists, food, music, celebrities and more. This year the parade will take place Sunday, June 18th 2023.
Museums & Attractions
If you’re looking for a culture-packed historic experience, you will not be disappointed by visiting one of Philadelphia’s renowned museums. Philadelphia offers plenty of options for those interested in history, art, science, medicine and more. Must-visit sites include: the Johnson House Historic Site, a vital stop on the Underground Railroad during the 1800s, and the African American Museum in Philadelphia, taking a fresh and bold look at the stories of African-Americans and their role in the founding of the nation.
