What would you do if you had a fear of speaking? What would you do if your senses spiraled out of control every time the slightest of summer morning breezes brushed across your face or a drop of rain fell upon your hand? For Qaisera Alexis, the subject of episode three of the ESSENCE Black Girl Magic docu-series, life was once like this. But she was able to triumph.

The 17-year-old lived part of her childhood life in silence for nearly a year-and-a-half before something clicked and her fears faded away. Now the junior Olympian and special needs advocate is doing all the things that people once said she wouldn’t be able to do–and excelling at it.
“I know that if those first few years of life had gone differently, I probably wouldn’t be where I am now,” she said.
