Barack and Michelle Obama have quite the love story, and today is the day they look back on it all.
In celebration of their 27th wedding anniversary, our forever POTUS and FLOTUS celebrated each other with touching tributes on social media. Barack Obama posted a photo of himself and his wife gazing at the sunset. “Like the Beatles said: It’s getting better all the time,” he writes. “Thanks, babe, for 27 amazing years!”
Mrs. Obama returned the love with a heartfelt post of her own. “27 years ago, this guy promised me a life full of adventure. I’d say he’s delivered,” she writes. “Here’s to our next chapter of becoming empty nesters and discovering what’s next—while still feeling the magic that brought us together all those years ago. Happy anniversary, Barack.”
Barack Obama met his wife (then Michelle Robinson) back in 1989 at a Chicago Law Firm where she was assigned to be his mentor. One month later, he asked her out on a date. Though apprehensive, Mrs. Obama agreed for lunch and a movie. After dating for a few years, they became engaged and wed on October 3, 1992. The Obamas have two daughters: Malia, 21 and Sasha, 18.
Back in July, Mrs. Obama graced the ESSENCE Festival stage, speaking with host Gayle King about her relationship with the former President and what sustained them through the stress and pressure of being in the White House.
“Marriage is a choice you make every day,” she explained. “You don’t do it because it’s easy. You do it because you believe in it. You believe in the other person.”
She also dropped some relationship advice about marrying your equal. “My husband is my teammate. If we are going to win this game together, he has to be strong and he has to be OK with me being strong. I do not want a weak player on my team, nor does he.”
Happy Anniversary to the Obamas!
