The Lucky Lady: April Bonhart, 35, General Ledger Jr. Accountant
Her Leading Man: Caleb Karren Prentise Robinson, 33, Home Improvement
The Big Day: April 9, 2016
Wedding Location: Troy, MI
How did you meet your man?
We are members of a charitable organization and had quite a few mutual friends. The group decided to take a bus trip to Mississippi and formed a chat group so everyone could get more acquainted with each other. Caleb and I would joke around in the chat group but we really got to know each other on the trip and have been inseparable ever since.
What was your dating life like before him?
I dated a few men before Caleb but nothing of great substance.
Were you looking for love at the time?
No; not at all. I actually had zero interest in dating and hadn’t been involved with anyone for 14 months prior to meeting Caleb.
What was your first impression of him?
I noticed was his smile and laugh at the same time. He has a special gift in his smile that makes everyone happy when he walks in the room.
And what did he say about you?
He remembers the exact outfit I had on when we first met face-to-face. He said he thought I was very pretty, had a nice smile and fell in love with my red lipstick. (Laughs.)
Most romantic date ever?
Honestly, I would have to say it was our first date. It wasn’t about roses and chocolates and fancy dinners. It was simple and touching. We both took a half-day from work and met inside the Detroit Renaissance Center. We walked to a Greek restaurant called Pegasus and had great conversation and many laughs. Next we walked to the store and filled my purse with snacks. Then we walked back to watch a movie. We were the only people in the theater except for one older lady, but it was if she wasn’t even there. The date was so natural, so unplanned and so “us!”
Who said “I love you” first?
He did, of course. He said it three weeks after dating. I felt it in that moment but it took me a little longer to actually say it back.
How long did you date before you got engaged?
Two years.
Did you have a hunch he was going to propose?
I knew that it was coming because we talked in depth about our future and goals, but I didn’t know he was going to do it that day. I actually thought he was going to propose the previous year on our anniversary, but clearly that didn’t happen. Since then, I told myself not to expect it and just wait for it to happen.
How did he pop the question?
He proposed the weekend of my 35th birthday. He recreated our first date and proposed in the same spot he asked me to be his girlfriend. It was very sweet and very much him. It was perfect!
