Advertising executive Kelvin, 43, and his fiancée Edwina, 31, an actress (The Wire, Treme), met at church. They didn’t discover they were soul mates for many years, but when they realized how special their connection truly was, they were all in. The happy couple is headed to the altar this fall. In the meantime, the New Yorkers love to spend their Friday evenings strolling through Midtown Manhattan, where they shot their engagement photos. Share their joy!
“I knew he was “The One” that day I walked into church and literally felt God knock the wind out of me and tell me that was my husband," Edwina says. “I had never really believed that could happen to a woman, which is why it was so crazy when it actually happened to me.”
Before the couple realized they were soulmates, Edwina submitted Kelvin in ESSSENCE’s “Do Right Man” Contest. “I really was amazed by the man I had come to know,” she says. “I walked all the way up to the corporate office of ESSENCE in midtown Manhattan and hand delivered the submission myself so as not to miss the deadline.”
“Getting to know Kelvin as a friend, I was just so amazed by his character and consistency,” Edwina says. “It wasn’t until years later that I actually got to know him, his heart, his genuine love for God, and the depth of his integrity and character, that I was really attracted to him.”
Kelvin proposed to Edwina on a cruise ship while sailing along the Hudson River. “Kelvin invited me to the dance floor,” she remembers. “We were the only couple on the floor. When the band stopped playing, the singer stopped singing and announced, ‘I think Kelvin has something he’d like to say.’ I looked at her, looked at the people and looked at him in disbelief.”
“I was so speechless that the crowd had to ask me what my answer was!” says Edwina of the day Kelvin proposed. “The next thing I knew everyone was clapping and I had a ring on my finger. I didn’t even see him put the ring on me. He tells me I completely checked out at that moment.”
Kevin and Edwina are planning a Hollywood premiere themed wedding, equipped with live performances and a red carpet. “Our save the date is a movie poster, The Wedding Day starring us!” says Edwina.
