For their engagement photo shoot, ESSENCE magazine Editor-In-Chief Vanessa K. Bush and her fiancé John De Luca retraced the steps of their first date including Rockefeller Center and a stroll through Central Park.
Her first impression: “I thought he was really fun. He’s sarcastic and we share the same sense of humor,” says Vanessa.
“After three months of dating, I decided to introduce him to my two kids Myles, 14 and Madison, 11,” she says. “They liked him.”
His impression: “She was really in her phone when we met. Once we started talking I realized she was smart and really cared about her family.”
“I knew I didn’t see my life without her when she had surgery our first year together,” John says. “Even though it was minor, I was nervous the whole time and right by her side when she woke up.”
“I love that Vanessa is so smart,” John says. “She loves ESSENCE and gives her all to the women she serves.”
The duo retraced the steps of their first date including Rockefeller Center and a stroll through Central Park.
The couple went back to the T.G.I. Friday’s where they met and sat in the same seats where they first locked eyes for their engagement photos.
“We love going to concerts and just went to see Dave Chappelle and Erykah Badu,” the bride-to-be says. “He’s really like a kid at heart when it comes to amusement and water parks.”
John studied his bride-to-be and picked out a ring all on his own. “I love it,” she says with a smile.
“He’s has been extremely supportive of my career and my transition to Editor-in-Chief,” Vanessa says. “He also helps me not take myself or the work too seriously.”
“I had to get used to letting somebody help me and trusting that it was going to be taken care of and not worry about it,” she says.
“He’s a huge hockey fan. I admit I knew nothing about hockey until I started dating him. But I now enjoy it,” she says.
“We are super excited about the wedding. My son Myles is giving me away and my daughter Madison is my maid of honor,” Vanessa says.
“I am looking forward to the end of our ceremony when we are officially pronounced husband and wife,” John says. Join us as we wish our Editor-in-Chief a very beautiful happily ever after. Share your well wishes below!
