How did you meet your man?
I actually saw Kamau during my first year at Howard two years before we would actually meet. We lived in the same dorm (Lucy Diggs Slowe Hall) and he became my campus crush. Fast-forward two years to when I met him in front of my dorm (The Towers) on move-in day. He asked if I needed help and I said no. My moving cart got stuck and he helped and then he helped unload it too. He asked me for my number; I said “No…but I’ll get yours!”
Was it love at first sight?
For me, it was a strong chemistry. I fought it because it was so early in our friendship.
Most romantic date yet?
Or our one-year anniversary he planned a surprise dinner at his friend’s gallery. He convinced our friends to participate in planning. There was a table in the middle of the gallery surrounded by art, candlelight and champagne and the evening ended with a movie date. He cooked and everything!
At what moment did you know he was “The One” for you?
A few months after officially meeting, I felt so comfortable and free around him. I felt like I knew him all my life. (And I had butterflies…and I still do.)
Who said “I love you” first?
He did!
What’s the sweetest thing he’s ever done for you?
On my 26th birthday he found and ordered my (late) fathers book at the library of congress.
How long did you date before he popped the question?
Six years.
Did you have a hunch he was going to propose?
No, not at all; I thought he was getting me a puppy.
How did he propose?
He surprised me before my 30th birthday with dinner at the Rivington Hotel in Lower Manhattan.
