It’s been years since the romance between K. Michelle and Idris Elba ended, and now she’s finally opening up about how they met and what really went down between them.
The singer and Love & Hip-Hop star sat down for a revealing interview with Hollywood Unlocked and spilled all (and we mean all!) of the tea about their relationship.
“People thought it was such an odd situation,” she said of the public perception about them dating. But throughout their time together, she never publicized their relationship for fear she’d look as if she were using him for fame.
“We would go out [but] I didn’t talk about [the relationship]. I wanted him to know that I wasn’t trying to pull anything. I never wanted to be that girl. Everyone around me knew, his management, my management. He was so charming, it was like a movie.”
The Memphis native said that she and the British hunk met at the Soul Train Music Awards in 2013 just after she won Best New Artist. After he complimented her beauty, she cracked a joke about his sense of style and “funny” accent but a connection had been made. After he dedicated a song to her at an afterparty, her bodyguard gave Elba her number and the two had a good romantic run before things just ran their course.
“He told me, he would never be committed to one woman,” Michelle added. “He said I would be taken care of, I would be fine but he would never commit to one woman.”
After admitting the same in his August 2017 ESSENCE cover story, Elba shocked the world in February 2018 when he popped the question to former Miss Vancouver 2014 winner Sabrina Dhowre. On the heels of his recent engagement, K. Michelle shares that while she was taken aback by the news, she learned something important: “Men are different with different women.”
She added, “That wasn’t supposed to be my man. Out of every relationship I’ve been in or [men] I’ve dated, I learned the most from him. It wasn’t volatile or angry. He didn’t bring out [me] cursing him out. He was a gentleman…[and gave] amazing head, I remember that.”
