Birthday wishes are in order for legendary soul diva Patti LaBelle. Born May 24th, 1944, the songstress turns 68 today, and we salute and pay tribute to her historic career in music.
Patti became the front woman for the group Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles in 1963. Never one to let anything stand in the way of her musical dreams, by the late ’70s she’d moved on to form the group Labelle, whose song “Lady Marmalade” became her first bona fide hit. LaBelle went on to find mega solo success in the early ’80s, earning multiple Grammy awards, an American Music Award and an Emmy.
Today we celebrate a woman who has sung her way into a special place in America’s heart. We will forever thank her for romantic classics like “On My Own,” “If Only You Knew” and “Somebody Loves You Baby.”
Happy birthday, Patti!
