The series returns tomorrow night, with another round of love stories we love, including screen time with Beyoncé and Solange’s mother, Tina Knowles Lawson, 64, and her husband, Richard Lawson, 71. In the mid-season premiere, Lawson shares the story of how he proposed to Mama Tina, and of course, it’s as sweet as pie.
The couple recall the time they went on a couple’s boat ride and they were the only pair who wasn’t married. While it was a great trip, Knowles Lawson says the experience was so powerful that it really jumpstarted their joint decision to consider making it official. First, she reveals, her granddaughter, Beyoncé and JAY-Z’s oldest daughter Blue Ivy, 6, was the first to ask them when they were going to walk down the aisle. (Aww!) Lawson says he then knew it was time to pop the question but there was one order of business he had to handle first—asking her daughters for their blessing.
“I called her children and I asked for her hand in marriage from them,” said Lawson. “I thought that that was important, because I knew without that, based upon the fact that Tina lives for her children, that it didn’t stand a chance unless they were on board. I was fortunate enough that they were completely on board and just over the top excited about it.”
As were we!
The Lawson were married in Newport Beach, California, on April 12, 2015.
Black Love returns on Tuesday, October 2, at 10/9c, on OWN.
