According to a recent interview with one of singer Sade’s collaborators, the wait for a new album might soon come to an end.
Since her 1984 debut Diamond Life, Sade has released six studio albums that have sold more than 20 million copies and garnered the singer four Grammy Awards. In spite of her massive popularity, Sade is known for churning out music at her own pace. She regularly takes long breaks between projects — her last album, Soldier of Love, was released eight years ago — and rarely pops up on the scene.
Still, Sade’s fans will continue to wait patiently for her return.
Stuart Matthewman, a songwriter and original member of Sade’s band, told Rated R&B that the singer is back in the studio.
“We’re working on a new album,” Matthewman said, noting the group has “a bunch of songs” fans will love.
But while they’re actively recording, Matthewman also said that Sade will continue to take her time to get the project exactly right and her record company, Epic, understands.
“The record company knows there’s no point in nagging us or giving us deadlines. It doesn’t really help the process,” he said.
Matthewman added, “[Sade’s] not interested in the fame or any of that [other] stuff. She likes to put out art. So when it’s ready, it will come out.”
Earlier this year, fans got a new song from the British vocalist, when she released “Flower of the Universe” for The Wrinkle In Time soundtrack.
During the chat, Matthewman also shared a funny anecdote about Sade’s last project, Soldier of Love, that perfectly summed up the elusive singer’s relationship with her fans.
“Years ago, I think it was when ‘By Your Side,’ the song came out, and big posters were stuck around New York. Someone sprayed or wrote on top of it, ‘Bitch sings when she wants to,’” he recalled.
“Sade loved it,” he added.
