Bio: Congresswoman Barbara Lee has been fighting for justice and equality in the Bay Area for
the last four decades. After moving to San Francisco as a small child, the El Paso, Texas native worked with the local NAACP chapter to integrate her high school cheer squad. As a college student, a meeting with Shirley Chisholm inspired Rep. Lee to get involved in politics and she went on to work on Congresswoman Chisholm’s historic presidential campaign, kicking off Rep. Lee’s career in public service.
A longtime community organizer and activist, Rep. Lee was first elected to a seat in the California State Assembly in 1990. Eight years later, she made the leap to the U.S. House of Representatives, becoming one of the leading voices on issues like the fight against HIV/AIDS, eradicating poverty, and the use of military force.
