Candidate name: Stacey Abrams
State: Georgia
Bio: Stacey Abrams is on the verge of making history. The Spelman College alum is locked in a close race to become the next governor of Georgia. If she’s successful, Abrams would become the first Black woman to hold the title in American history. Abrams has worked across several sectors, spanning the nonprofit world to the Georgia State House. Before launching her gubernatorial campaign, she served as Democratic Minority Leader of the Georgia General Assembly, reaching across the aisle to strike bipartisan deals on transportation, infrastructure, and education. In addition to her service in the Georgia Assembly, Abrams also co-founded the New Georgia Project, an organization that works to register voters of color. Abrams has racked up high-profile endorsements from several prominent Democrats like former Presidents Jimmy Carter and Barack Obama, and labor groups like the AFL-CIO. While it remains to be seen if Abrams can turn a Red state Blue, she believes voters are looking to try something different.
“Georgians are ready for a progressive leader with bold plans to expand access to quality healthcare, improve our public schools, and create good-paying jobs in every corner of the state,” she told ESSENCE. “I am the only candidate with detailed plans to create tangible, positive change for Georgia, and that’s exactly the sort of reason that voters are looking for to come to the polls.”
