Candidate name: Linda Coleman
State: North Carolina
Bio: Linda Coleman was raised in North Carolina in a family with 10 children. In her teens, she worked in the tobacco fields to buy clothes for school. Coleman attended North Carolina A&T University and went on to become a public school teacher. A desire to serve the community led her to run successfully for the Wake County Board of Commissioners in 1998; she later served three terms in the North Carolina House of Representatives. A mother and grandmother, Coleman says she is running for Congress to expand economic opportunity for families, increase access to public education and ensure high-quality health care. She will fight, she says, to lower health insurance premiums, promote vocational and skills training, and ensure fair tax cuts. Coleman’s endorsements include former President Barack Obama, Rep. John Lewis of Georgia and EMILY’s List.
