What should Mrs. Obama wear? »
It was a fashionable affair at the first-ever Neighborhood Inaugural Ball, broadcasted live on ABC. “First of all, how good-looking is my wife?” said our 44th President, Barack Obama, at the historic event, “This ball is the one that captures best the spirit of this campaign.” The ball also captured the essence of political elegance when the First Couple entered the room embodying American glamour. The First Lady selected emerging designer Jason Wu, 26, a Taipei native, to dress her for the extraordinary occasion.
Wu played close attention to detail when designing this long, flowing one-shoulder gown. The ruched bodice and full skirt accentuated her tall frame, while the sparkling beads added a touch of romance to the creation that will be donated to the Smithsonian museum.
A new design star, Wu launched his collection in 2006. He attended New York’s prestigious Parsons School of Design and coincidently interned with Narciso Rodriguez, an Obama fashion favorite. Mrs. Obama has a friendly approach to fashion, choosing to endorse new design houses rather than well-known brands. Like her husband’s message of “change,” the First Lady is setting a new precedent in style.
