The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences isn’t known for its diversity, hence the #OscarsSoWhite trend that’s popped up over the years. But, this year the Academy has made a pretty big stride in trying to become more diverse.
A record 683 people were invited to join the 7,000 member organization and an unprecedented number are women and people of color. Of those invited 46% are women and 41% are people of color.

The invitation list includes Idris Elba, Michael B. Jordan, Vivica A. Fox, Regina King, Chadwick Boseman, Gabrielle Union, Nia Long, and John Boyega to name a few.
Only those who accept will be admitted into the Academy and welcomed at an invitation-only reception in the fall.
Needless to say, people will be watching the Academy closely come Oscar season to see if this push for diversity extends to the awards.
