While we tend to focus on our own community we often forget how the very same topics are being faced in others. Afro-Latinas face some of the very same criticism when rocking their natural hair from family members to co-workers to stylists is Dominican salons. Despite the negativity they embrace, enjoy and nurture their natural coils and curls and discuss on a video from Flama, a digital network created by, and for young Latinos.
The downsides are quite familiar to black women who have been facing criticism whether from school, work, or family. Despite those negatives, the love is equally as deep for Latinas and as one participant in the video shared, “Mi pelo no es malo porque nunca le ha hecho mal a nadie,” or “My hair isn’t bad because it never did anything bad to anyone.”
