Perhaps Gay Pride weekend is not the best time to post a gay slur on Twitter, a lesson basketball star Amar’e Stoudemire surely learned this weekend. The New York Knicks power forward is the latest celebrity to make national headlines for using homophobic remarks, according to New York Daily News.
Stoudemire’s words came in response to a tweet posted on Saturday by Brian Ferrelli, a Knicks super fan known to the Twitter world as “B ForReal.” “You better come back a lot stronger and quicker to make up for this past season, dead[butt],” he tweeted. Stoudemire replied to the fan with a direct message saying, “F*** you. I don’t have to do any thing f–.”
Of course, in proper Twitter etiquette, Ferrelli retweeted a screen shot of the message for the world to see. The news soon became a trending topic and was even picked up by a few sports blogs.
Stoudemire clearly recognized the magnitude of this words as he sent another direct message to say sorry. “I apologize for what I said earlier. I just got off a plane and had time to think about it,” he wrote to Ferrelli. “Sorry bro!! No Excuses. Won’t happen again.”
Ferrelli said he doesn’t want to make the situation bigger that it already is. “He apologized and I accepted it,” he told the New York Daily News in a tweet.
However, the world may not be as quick to forgive. Stoudemire now joins the likes of Tracy Morgan, Chris Brown and Roland Martin, who have all been caught using homophobic language.
It’s still unclear if the NBA will take action against Stoudemire.
