Much of the internet rejoiced when it was announced that Oscar winner Octavia Spencer would star in a reboot of Murder, She Wrote on NBC.
Unfortunately, not everyone was happy about the news. The show’s former star, Angela Lansbury, thinks it’s a terrible idea, according the Hollywood Reporter.
“I think it’s a mistake to call it Murder, She Wrote because [it] will always be a Cabot Cove and this wonderful little group of people who told those lovely stories and enjoyed a piece of that place, and also enjoyed Jessica Fletcher, who is a rare and very individual kind of person,” explained Lansbury.
Despite her feelings toward the reboot, Lansbury admires Spencer’s work on screen. “I saw her in The Help and thought she was absolutely wonderful, a lovely actress. So I wish her well, but I wish it wasn’t in Murder, She Wrote.”
The upcoming show won’t be a complete remake of the original, however many of the same premises will exist. In the procedural drama, Spencer will play a hospital administrator and writer who self-publishes her first mystery novel. But her affinity for crime leads her to solve real-life murders.
How do you feel about Lansbury’s comments? Should she have given her blessing?
